Plan a warehouse project

Think beyond the stair

Every site has its own brief.

Use + circulation

Who uses the stair, what it connects and how it fits into the building.

Surrounding works

Interfaces with floors, landings and the surrounding structure.

Site + sequence

Delivery access, site conditions and the timing of related works.

Start with the intended use

One building.
Different stair requirements.

The building label alone does not determine the stair requirements. Confirm its purpose, users and any exit role with the project designer and certifier.

Plant + maintenance access

Access for operating, inspection or maintenance personnel may follow an AS 1657 pathway where applicable. It is not the default for every warehouse stair.

Occupied warehouse mezzanine

Confirm how the upper level is used, who accesses it and its part in the building’s circulation and evacuation arrangements.

Commercial + office circulation

Consider the building requirements and accessibility provisions that apply to the proposed spaces and users.

Required exit

If the stair forms part of a required exit, establish the relevant egress requirements before choosing its layout or details.

The applicable NCC edition and project approval circumstances also need confirmation. Source: ABCB guidance on fixed access.
